I restored the wrong version of my bookmarks

more options

Hi, I just did a clean reinstallation of windows and it deleted all my files. I installed Firefox and logged in to sync bookmarks and tabs, but I realized I hadn't activated tab sync. So in a desperate attempt to restore them, I tried the Restore option in Archives. And it restored to the Firefox version before i had synchronized my bookmarks, the bookmarks was gone and before I could react it had already synchronized. Now my bookmarks are gone aswell. I tried looking for a profile in the Appdata\Roaming Firefox folder but I can't find any profile from before the wipe.

Is there anything I can do to get my bookmarks back? Or are they completely lost?

Nevermind, I just realized I have Firefox installed on my laptop. I can just launch Firefox offline and export the bookmarks.

Hi Svein, this is a difficult situation. Did you use the built-in Windows "Reset" or "Refresh" feature that backs up your data in this folder:

C:\Windows.old

Can you find such a folder on your system?

If so:

Before proceeding, please set Windows to show you hidden files and folders: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

Then check here:

C:\Windows.old\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

You might just have one profile folder, or you might have more than one. The bookmark backup files are in a folder named bookmarkbackups in each profile. The creation data and number of items is coded into the file name. You can copy promising files to the Desktop to try in a Restore.

Anything so far?

You can grab copies of the files under

[profile folder\bookmarkbackups

from the laptop and copy those to the bookmarkbackups folder of the new build to populate the Restore menu with those backup.
