Since updating to FF 8/9, many websites will not load, even in safe mode. Any idea what the problem might be?

All sites worked fine prior to v8.0 and 9.0. But now many sites (e.g., newegg.com & baltimoresun.com) will not load. I have to hit the Reload button numerous times before anything appears onscreen at all. I tried safe mode -- no help. I turned off javascript, which helped some but didn't cure the problem since even with it off some sites still never finish loading. I also disabled IPv6 and DNS Prefetching, and emptied the cache, all to no avail. It seems to be graphics that aren't loading. Does anyone have any idea what the issue is? I swear I'm ready to go over to Chrome or Solaris if I can't fix this. It's incredibly frustrating.

Well, the problem was caused by the upgrade to v8.0 corrupting something in my profile. Creating a new profile made the loading problem go away, so that's the fix for this particular issue. A major pain for sure, since creating a new 'duplicate' profile is not a very elegant process in FF.

WARNING: If you attempt this fix, be sure to to make a backup of your current profile first. (When I deleted my original profile in the Profile Manager, it also -- unbelievably -- removed the files I had copied over to my new profile. Any thoughts on that, dev team?!)

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Thanks for replying. However, I've tried everything (again) that you suggested and none of it has helped. Just as an example, the baltimoresun site has been loading, but blank, for about 10 minutes now with cookies removed, cache cleaned, and in safe mode; yet the site works fine in IE.
