I know how to use keystrokes in Word, but they don't work in email. I tried changing from English to French in the language bar but that didn't help. What's the secret?

A possibility is to install a keyboard layout like US International that supports dead keys to make it easier to enter accented letters.
You need to change the keyboard layout while Firefox has focus because Windows remembers that layout per program.
