Why is text on some sites showing up as strange symbols?

Starting about a week ago, text on many sites started showing up as strings of symbols (mostly an A in a box). See screenshots. It seems to be happening mostly to text used in links, and only on some sites. It makes some sites basically impossible to use. It just started happening out of nowhere, and I can't see how to fix it.

Hi  !

We've seen a lot of these reports lately - most users are on Mac OS.

Would you try this :

Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter) Promise to be careful, if asked) Type and look for the preference : security.sandbox.content.level and set its value to 1 (one) (default value is 3 )

Everything back to normal now, or still no joy  ?
