What about firefox -P "profile name" (where profile name is the name of the profile)?

I'm not able to reduplicate this issue. But another possible solution is a profile switching add-on like the profilist extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/profilist/?src=api

Try the version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution. You can find the full version of the current current Firefox release (37.0.2) in all languages and all operating systems here:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
