How to change download destination of files to another location?

Lots of computers sometimes will not even boot, let alone get on the Internet, because malware, viruses, or a system freeze corrupted some file(s) or directory structures. So, a few companies and entrepreneurs came up with "self-booting CD's" such as "The Boot CD" and "Hiren's Boot CD." Since Mozilla Firefox and Opera browsers are free downloads, they are ideal solutions to the licensing problem posed by Internet Explorer from Microsoft. I had the problem of a hardware conflict blocking my wireless Internet adapter from working, preventing me from getting on the Internet. So, I used one of my self-booting operating systems to get on the Internet to download a different driver that might solve the problem. I found the driver using Firefox, but I could NOT find a way to save it to my hard drive! It defaulted to the "desktop", which is entirely UNwritable, since it is a non-rewritable file on a bootable CD operating system! I found no way to select a different, WRITABLE location where I could actually save the file!
