I just updated Java (I think) and a box of instructions about "activating" and "updating" and "plug-ins", etc. appeared. I have no idea why or what or when or where or whether- I am to understand and/or do. I read all the instructions several times but I still don't know what a plug-in is, let alone choosing to activate or update something in this specific instance. (And does this relate to the Java update somehow?)

I hope I've related sufficient info for someone to help me. And that help will definitely be APPRECIATED!!

A plug-in is a type of add-on. It's a program on your computer that allows a browser (like Firefox) to render content it otherwise can't handle. Java, Flash Player, QuickTime and Silverlight are examples of plug-ins.

You can check if Java is up-to-date on the following page.

At the moment, the Mozilla Plugin Check page may incorrectly identify the current version of Java as outdated.

Note however that most sites don't require Java. You shouldn't have it installed unless you know for a fact that you need it.
