Why does Firefox shutsdown my audio?

I'm a big fan of Firefox and have used it for years, however I can't anymore. The reason is that since I updated to 8.0 or the one before, Firefox frequently shuts down my audio. This happens on many different websites with audio sources. I know it is Firefox because when I exit out of Firefox, a little while after my audio will come back on. I switched to Google Chrome and don't have this problem and I never used to have this problem with Firefox either so I'm pretty sure it is caused by the newer versions of Firefox. Everything is up to date. Can anyone help.

I don't know what might externally return audio for Firefox that you came back into Firefox is was working again, but I would check out the following because starting with Windows Vista applications have their own volume control in the Volume Mixer.

  1. Restore speaker icon to System Task bar, right-click on clock or tray > Properties > Volume: On
  2. Click on the Sound icon in System tray then on Mixer, make sure Firefox is not muted picture

Thanks or the reply. I checked both solutions you proposed and they were already both correct.

I do get sound in Firefox, like watching Youtube videos, and then randomly the audio will shut off, such as opening a new page that contains audio like another Youtube video.

I get no system sound whatsoever even from other sources such as itunes when this happens. I thought at first my speakers were broken and would restart the computer. Immediately when I click restart the sound comes back on for the shutdown audio. However, I noticed if I just exited Firefox the sound will eventually come back on. I don't experience this problem with Chrome, so I know it is exclusive to Firefox. I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it so it is a fresh install. I have looked and tried to update all the plug-ins I could, because in one of the links you sent it suggested out of date plug-ins.

I don't know what to do from here besides wiping my computer, which I don't feel like doing just for Firefox. If you have any other ideas it would be appreciated as I like Firefox, thanks.

Wiping your computer is not going to help, you will end up eventually with the same problem installing the same extensions and/or configuration settings the only advantage is that you are more likely to realize when it is broken. And you may well end up with other things broken on your system. But same applies even if you just did that for Firefox in that you are likely to break other things you had working within Firefox.

Did you look at the MozillaZine article they are almost always more complete than Support articles are geared to help at a more advanced level. For instance if you did not try Safe Mode yet and have not tried looking in Problematic Extensions then you have not looked at the articles or beyond the first links.

Also you have not posted the url for someone to actually check out, without information you can supply everyone is kept in the dark.

You may have a problem with the plugin-container program.

A lot of videos have their own sound control and I'm not sure if it is always tied into the volume control on the system tray, one was even on the left hand side, actually it may have been audio only. If you stop music and restart Firefox then the audio starts up again.
