I need someone to talk me through replacing a password with one that works. On line instructions do not match with the version of the application I have on my computer. This is happening on my wife's email address: ... @gmail.com. Her email works ok on her cell phone connection but because of the password problem on the desktop computer we cannot download messages to Thunderbird on that PC.

Check that the incoming server is pop.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com, and check that the outgoing is smtp.gmail.com. Set the authentication method to OAuth2 for both servers. Accept cookies in TB Preferences/Privacy & Security, and in the same section remove passwords from Saved Passwords. Then, restart TB and enter the current, working account (not app) password in the OAuth window to allow TB access.
