Upgraded from FF 40 to FF 44 (Windows 7) and immediately all the sites I access regularly have me logged out. Not a huge deal as I just sign in again. But three days later it has happened again.

Checked my cookie/privacy settings and nothing has changed. Have not installed or ran any apps that would clear the cookies, such as CC cleaner.

For now, downgraded back to 41 to see if at least that version is safe.

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • You can create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep specific cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions
  • Removing cookies from a website makes the website forget about you

If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file in the profile folder that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • Rename/remove cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and if present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data.
  • Clearing cookies will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception you want to keep.

Thanks cor-el for keeping up with the questions submitted by users. I will try the last suggestion about custom settings but have already followed the other suggestions as I had seen them as answers to multiple users with the same issues.

Just now I am logged out of all sites. So we went about a week without a hitch On 2/25 I cleared all cookies, deleted the cookies.sqlite and its backup files, then went into Custom Settings as described above.

If you clear all cookies by removing cookies.sqlite then this will make websites forget about you and you are logged off from all websites that remembered you.

If you didn't remove this file after 2/25 then something else might have happened that caused cookies to get cleared.

Correct. I did all of the purging on Feb 25th just to ensure there was no corruption and to start out with a clean slate. Now, forward 8 days later, all my sites are logged out for no apparent reason.

Am about to go back to FF40 or 41 and see what happens unless there are some other suggestions?

TIA

Did you check if the cookies are still there in the Cookie Manager?

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"

It has now been 15 days of me reverting back to FF41. (although when my problem started I went from 40>44) The problem has NOT appeared so it is definitely something with the newer version doing it.
