My hard disk crashed so I got another laptop and installed Firefox as browser. After logging in into Sync, I had expected to see my favorites. But this isn't the case. How can I get them back? I have no back-up of the profile files as I thought this was kept in my online profile.

Nothing is kept by Mozilla.org unless you use the Firefox Sync.

There are two things that can help you.

1) Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and Log in. When ever you decide to download an add-on or whatever from here, On the top right side of the add-ons page is a button marked Add To Favorites. If you need to find them again, just go to your user profile at the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page They are all listed in your profile.

2) These add-ons can help you a great deal;

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.
