Hi,

I had developed a BSOD issue (PFN-LIST-CORRUPT) and tried a system restore to correct. Then, T-Bird gave me the "cannot open XPCOM" message. Research said I should backup the profile, uninstall and reinstall T-bird. Did that, but now TBird:

1) No longer opens in the the top acct's INBOX (as it used to).

2) No longer opens any folders (except the initial one) when double clicked. I have to right click and open each in a new window.

3) No longer opens without the preview pane . With F8, it always come back. Cannot find a default OFF setting.

How do I get this back to normal??? I thought all these settings were saved in the Profile??

Thanks!!

Larry

Just a guess, but the error you report is caused by either bad drivers for devices or bad devices. It also means there is a high probability your hard disk information is not in a consistent state. Use of system restore for a BSOD may fix the issue (for a short time) but it will not recover or repair any defects in the systems hard disk the event caused. You should also be aware that your hardware may well be failing be it memory or hard disk drives..

Open windows files manager, right click the C: drive and select properties. In the tools tab select the check button. That may require a restart of windows but it will check the hard disk is actually logically consistent and does not have file pointers pointing to the middle of files, or contradictory backups of the file locations on disk.

HI Matt, thanks for your help.

Having an SSD, I understand that CKDSK and Defrag are both unnecessary and could be harmful.

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic but it came out clean. I have two 8Gb paired memory cards. Maybe I will remove one at a time and see what happens? Doing so, I will lose the Dual Channel benefits temporarily. Worthwhile doing this?

Lastly, though this is all important, does it have anything to do with my TBird issues?

I do not have an SSD, but I would accept the advice given here https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

My experience with Microsoft MVPs is they usually know what they are talking about. An SSD is probably no less prone the having logical disk errors that a mechanical disk. Particularly following a stop, as the write that updates the NTFS equivalent to the file allocation table and making the backup may be interrupted by the stop.

Unless you suffer more issues pulling memory cards is overkill. Most such issues are caused by video cards and their drivers. But any hardware driver can be the cause, as can failing hardware.

I am testing the DIMMS now as the BSOD issue continues. Meanwhile, how do I get TB back in shape?? Thanks.

re :No longer opens without the preview pane . With F8, it always come back.

Note: There is no such thing as a 'Preview' Pane. There is no preview of anything. Single click on email in list will open an email in the list and display the contents in the Message Pane (assuming the 'Message Pane' is enabled) in the same way as double clicking on an email in the list to open email in another tab. I mention this because some people think it is a 'preview' of the email and therefore has risk element which of course in not the case.

If you use CCleaner or any other similar product, please do not allow it to have any access to Thunderbird files and folders.

Try this: Make hidden files and folders visible:

In Thunderbird

  • Help > TRoubleshooting Information
  • click on 'Open Folder' button
  • Now Exit Thunderbird.

A window opened showing all the contents of your profile name folder. Locate and delete the following files:

  • foldertree.json
  • panacea.dat
  • session.json
  • xulstore.json

when you start Thunderbird a new set of default files and folders will be created. Reset all the preferences you prefer like switching off the 'Message Pane' view.

Thank you Todd-Hall.

I checked on the CCleaner concerns. Everything is unchecked and I ran Analyze and there is nothing from Mozilla there.

I followed you deletion instructions but these problems persist:

1) No longer opens in the the top acct's INBOX (as it used to).

2) No longer opens any folders (except the initial one) when double clicked. I have to right click and open each in a new window.

3) No longer opens without the message pane . With F8, it always come back. Cannot find a default OFF setting.

Thanks, Larry

Well, I decided to try something out of the box. I uninstalled 52.9.1 and installed 52.7.0.

Everything works fine now. Does this mean that I can no longer accept program updates??

Thanks, Larry

No! Did you try installing 59.9.1 again? my guess is you had an add-on (probably calendar) that was not the correct version and it messed up the user interface.

I just now let it update to 52.9.1 and the problems all returned!! it is one of the add-ons.

It is the Lightning add-on.

COULD THE APP CONFLICT HAVE BEEN CAUSING MY BSOD's???

Remove the lightning add-on and restart Thunderbird.

I thought it was obvious that I had done that since I found that THAT add-on had caused the problem. Anyway. Done.

Matt, I also wanted to thank you for your assistance, esp with your concern about the BSODs.

Now reinstall Thunderbird from getthunderbird.com. You can uninstall if you like, but it is not necessary. That should set up the correct lightning (the one included in the installer.

As for your BSOD, Thunderbird is most unlikely to be the cause. There are some low level interactions with the video driver software if you have hardware acceleration enabled in the options. (options > advanced > General) but nothing that interacts at the hardware level. No application "general use" application software should be interacting with hardware in ring 0 except the operating system, drivers and sometimes anti virus folk who think they are allowed in there, along with some "utilities" that are supposed to scan disks for data etc.

Basically windows has (or the processor, but it amounts to about the same thing) a "real" mode or ring 0 which allows access to the computers hardware in real time. and Ring 3 which is where application software lives. Drivers live in ring 2. Wikipedia reference https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protection_ring

Basically to cause a BSOD you have to force hardware into a stop situation or some sort of unrecoverable crash. Easily done is you pull the plug, run in a brown out or have failing hardware, say a disk drive that is returning rubbish at certain times, so cached information in the swap file comes back into main memory with invalid pointers to data structures in the video driver for instance.

A BSOD is very difficult to cause with application software as all the other layers should insulate the hardware from silly commands. Honestly if your hardware is newish then something in a driver is probably the cause. If your hardware is new new, then it is as suspect as if it is old. One is still in the burn in phase of it's life as the other gets to burnt out. This is why Hard disk manufacturers use the MTBF metric when they describe their devices as most failures occur very early or very late in the life of the device, so using an average they get to claim years as the mean time between failures. I recall in the 1990s when we used to "burn in" drives on new computers having 5 failures out of 70 on particularly bad batch of drives on the 12 hour burn in testing.

Wow, that is a lot to absorb!! Thanks!

I no longer get the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT or the MEM MANAGEMENT BSODs. It now says it is a driver but does not say which. The BSOD flashes so fast, you only get to read 1 line or so at best. The Event Viewed mentions Adobe Platform/ Event ID 2720 and VDS Basic Event ID 1 but research on those come up empty. Still tryin'! Thanks! Larry
