Tbird seems to download all the emails on the server, spodradically

When I installed Tbird on a new laptop, it said it downloaded more than the number of emails (around 22K) already there (ended up at 55K). This stopped for a while but right now it is dlding 8+K of messages in spite of having been used every day for a week (ended up at 63K). With this last mass download, I see lots of duplicates but not the same number for all of the messages -some 1x, 2x (that is 2 copies, 3 copies). This used to happen surreptitiously- I never saw mass downloadings but when scrolling through old emails I would come across multiple (5+) copies of the same emails. It seemed to be related to the number of Backups that had been done but not too sure about that.

Does this mean Tbird should have a bit more code to check that what it is downloading is in fact just New, and not otherwise disposed: for example: stored in a sub folder or simply deleted. Maybe an option to say 'Download only since last time Tbird' was opened would do it. And maybe add a second option: Download all messages 'date and time' and store in Inbox or a drop list of other folders.

If you open the Account Settings window and go to the Synchronization & Storage panel for the account in question, you can indeed direct Thunderbird to download only the messages within a discrete time frame.

Under Disk Space, switch to Synchronize the most recent: and then adjust the drop down menus to specify the time frame you wish to use and click OK. Now in the main window, go to the File menu and select Compact Folders. Once the operation has completed, close Thunderbird completely and once re-opened, it should be behaving as you wished.

I don't see a Synch & Storage panel anywhere and not in Disk Space. I now see a way to keep some old messages and delete the rest.

'Star' the keepers. Delete messages more than ## days old. Shut down Tbird. Open Tbird.
