Try to increase the value of the general.smoothScroll.mouseWheel.durationMaxMS pref on the about:config page a higher value like 1000 to see if that makes a difference with smooth scrolling enabled.

I'm not sure how to quite fix this problem but you can try doing the following to check if your settings are correct:

  1. 1 Go to options and select "Advanced".
  2. 2 In "Advanced" go to the "General" tab.
  3. 3 Make sure you have the following checked.
               * Use autoscrolling
               * Use smooth scrolling
               * Use hardware acceleration when available

i am curious what autoscrolling does, no difference; the others were checked already i think it has to do with the memory stack becoming too large, after much browsing, multiple tabs, etc. it works ok, if it is recently opened with just a few tabs ... what really worked for me was: yet-another-smooth-scrolling

That sounds like the right answer, for the smoothscrolling thing at least. I don't think it addresses the problem with memory bloat, but that seems to be a systemic problem with firefox. Probably needs a complete rewrite. I've heard as much, anyway.
