I have Firefox 8.0.1 and since updating to it some of the sites I need to go too Firefox will not accept the certificates that is accepted in the previous version. I cannot get the permanent exception and have to uncheck permanent and do it everytime.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

It is usually not necessary to create a exception for certificates.
Possible causes are that a server doesn't send the full (intermediate) certificate chain or self signed certificates.

I can't connect to that website (times out), so can't check which certificates are needed.

Do yo need a DoD (Department of Defense) certificate to access that site?
That should work on a Mac without the need to add an exception.

The site is a DOE site (Government) and you need a user name and password plus a VPN client to get to the site. I have all the certificates and they all worked until I did the last update. I called our CIS folks and they sent me the correct certificate and it is still making me take an exception each time I log into the program

It will not take the exemption as a permanent one it makes uncheck permanent exemption and only do the session exemption

You may have to remove exceptions or certificates that you've installed before.

  • Firefox > Preferences > Advanced : Encryption: Certificates - View Certificates (Servers and Authorities)

Rename the file cert8.db to cert8.db.old in the Firefox Profile Folder to remove all intermediate certificates that Firefox has stored by visiting secure websites.

Rename or delete the file cert_override.txt (cert_override.txt.old) in the Firefox Profile Folder to remove all permanent exceptions that you have saved.

If that helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed files.
