Recently when trying to download a .xpi file I accidentally clicked on adobe reader instead of the program I wanted to use to open it, and now it repeatedly tries to use adobe reader to open it no matter what I do, I've looked everywhere and I can't change this. Could you please inform me on how to change what I use to open a file?

You can install such an locally saved extension in Firefox by dragging the file in a Firefox tab or use "Firefox/File > Open File" to install the extension. There is usually no need to open an xpi file directly.
