Search results option to display in list view by default, please...

Search results are displayed in expanded form with an option to display in a compact list view, my preference. There is no way to set list view as default. Researching I find there is a 13 year old 'bug' on Bugzilla still shown as 'New'. Has anyone found a workaround for this? Why is a 13 year old Bugzilla repore still going unaddressed?
