Symbols that were previously visible all the time on Firefox no longer seem to load. Instead they appear like this http://snag.gy/Oztzz.jpg . Before this problem these appeared as small circles and big circles... A lot of previously visible symbols are like this. I've never encountered this problem on Firefox on any other OS, so is it a Vista thing or what?

That is one of the Unicode symbol characters.

You need to install a font that includes those glyphs to see the actual characters instead of the boxes with the hex code that Firefox displays when no font is font that can display those characters.
