Can't read epub docs, can't install epub reader (not compatible with Firefox 8.0.1)?

I downloaded a manuscript from Smashwords.com in epub format. It's my manuscript, and I have to be able to read it in this format. However, it's gibberish. I tried to install epub reader 1.4.1.0, but received the message that it's not compatible with Firefox 8.0.1. I also tried to install Adobe digital and Adobe 7.0, but Firefox isn't letting me. I need to be able to read that epub document! Thanks.
