Hello,

I have been using Thunderbird since its inception, it is my favorite email software.

Unfortunately, for many months now I have had to go through the Safe Mod (via key SHIFT) to access my e-mails: it becomes really very painful! When I want to go through normal mode, Thunderbird always quits and becomes unusable.

How can I return to normal use without losing the messages that I have kept since ... 2005? > 1To

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards.

PS : sorry for my poor English (I'm French)

Chosen solution

You probably won't fix anything by reinstalling, as that won't affect your data in the separate profile folder.

Launch in normal mode, if you can, and disable hardware acceleration in Options/General/Indexing, then restart TB.

If the layout is broken, launch in safe mode, check 'Reset toolbars & controls', 'Make changes & restart'. These instructions are on the page cited above.

If it works in safe mode, there are a few possibilities: you have an incompatible theme or add-on, the layout is broken, or hardware acceleration is enabled. There are other, less likely causes, but try the remedies for those factors and see if TB works properly in normal mode.

First of all, thanks a lot for your rapid answer.

I'm terribly sorry but I don't understand very well what you mean by saying "the layout is broken" or "hardware acceleration is enabled" ?

I think the best to do for me would be to completely uninstall Thunderbird (by the way, my actual release is 78.11.0 (32 bits)) then to completely reinstall it. But, as said before, I have so many years / data (xxx.default : 66,5 Go !) saved with it that I fear to definitely loose them ! It would be awful for me.

Could you assure me not to lose them or at least to find them easily?

After using your solutions, the problem is now solved, thank you so much.

Moreover, I installed the 78.11.0 (64-bits) release and the result is now perfect, beyond my expectations.
