Where is thumbnails folder?
I just did a long overdue update to FF 48.0 on a Linux Mint installation and set browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled to "true" to disable thumbnails on new tabs. The instructions I followed indicated that the "thumbnails" folder in the profile needs to be deleted to get rid of the thumbnails that have already been captured but I cannot find any such folder.

Thanks, but this link is just another rendition of the instructions I have already followed. I have set the cited preferences but I cannot find any folder or file named "thumbnails" in the FF profile folder.
On Windows, it's in: AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile_name>\thumbnails
Anyway, you can search for the folder \thumbnails on your OS.

Like I said, the OS is Linux Mint. Also, I ran the find command looking for "thumbnails" in the profile directory with no success. Perhaps it doesn't exist.
I have a newtab page and have not tried to remove the tiles. I am using Firefox on Windows 10. I do not see any folder called thumbnails in my profile. I wonder if the location of these has been changed.
I often have Linux available to check on but not right now. Did you find a thumbnails folder in your Windows Firefox profile Oxylatium ?
Besides the one click at a time method of clearing these it is also possible to opt for a blank tab with no thumbnails.
