Migrating machines to Win 7 from Vista. Using Windows Mail on Vista. Installed Thunderbird on Win 7 and did the automatic configuration but it would not connect to the provider (sbcglobal.net email). Did the same install on Vista. It did connect. Ideas?

Chosen solution

First guess is that the firewall on the win 7 machine is blocking Thunderbird. Make sure it is set to Allow or similar and not Blocked or Auto.

Then compare the settings from the Vista machine and make sure they are correct in Thunderbird.

Firewall setting the same on both machines but I opened it up on 7 to allow Thunderbird. No difference. Thunderbird tells me that provider (ATT) reported error in either the password or user name. I have double checked this so am still stumped. Thanks for the suggestion, however.

Further info. Deleted my account and started over. No changes, so far as I know, to the user id or password, but this time it worked. Thanks again

Sounds like a server setting was wrong the first time around.
