I have never had any problems before with any version of Thunderbird, but as soon as I installed the latest version 31.0 I started having freezes that forced me to wait for quite a while before I could proceed.

The freezes always happen after a create a new email and start entering the sendto email address

I used Windows 7's resource monitor (I'm using Win 7 64 bit) and it gave me this error message:

one or more threads of thunderbird.exe are waiting to finish network I/O

Please help me. Thunderbird is no longer very usable.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

The problem that I mentioned happens only occasionally, and since there are many emailing sessions where it doesn't happen, the suggestions that Matt gave won't help.

What I would like is a utility or method to detect why it is happening when it is happening.

What you would like is not going to get you anywhere are such a thing does not exist, given the most likely source of the issue is external to Thunderbird (I don't see thousands here looking for freezing support) your looking for a windows utility that monitors contention. I am not aware of such tools.
