typing always opens the Find box and characters appear there instead of my crossword puzzle.

Hi there.

That sounds like Find As You Type, see here for further information on this feature: http://website-archive.mozilla.org/www.mozilla.org/access/access/type-ahead/.

To check if you have the feature enabled, go to about:preferences#advanced (type or copy into Firefox's address bar) and see if there is a tick in the box for Search for text when I start typing. If there is, remove it.

If there was no tick in the box, go to about:config, promise to be careful, and search for the preference accessibility.typeaheadfind. If its value is true, double-click it to change it to false and the feature should be disabled.

You may have to restart Firefox for the change to take effect.

Does this resolve the issue?
