How do I remove the navigation bar?

I used to be able to remove the nagivation bar before today's update. However now there is no longer an apparent option to remove the navigation bar. I like to view multiple portrait pictures side by side, so having more vertical space in my window is important to me. The navigation bar is quite large, as well as the blue space around the tabs, and I wish to either remove or shrink it. I know how to turn off the menu bar already.

Yes I know pressing f11 fullscreens a picture. I use multiple monitors and want large portrait-orientation pictures on one while I type on the other. Is there a way to remove the navigation bar temporarily? This was one of my favorite features.
