Hi, for the last few weeks, Firefox has been showing ridiculously high disk usage and memory usage - near 100% - growing steadily from the moment I open the program until it stops responding, crashes, screws up my system (mouse cursor hanging etc) and eventually I manage to end process.

Internet Explorer on the same laptop - Windows 8, 8GB of RAM - is fine.

Things I've tried: - Making sure Firefox is up to date. - Turning off Firefox multiprocess - Disabling add-ons - 'Minimize memory usage' in about:memory - Resetting Firefox - Restarting Firefox - The other advice at this page https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=High+memory+usage

What can people advise?

Hi, please try : SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Performance > Uncheck to view)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected
