newsgroup server requies login

Trying to set up newsgroups on thunderbird V45.5. I have servers that require login (reader443.eternal-september.org for instance. There is no place to enter that server requires login except for under server settings "Always request authentication when connecting to this server". At no point does it give an error message or prompt me for credentials. Am I missing something?

found it... Enter the base information in settings and then "download messages" for the newsgroup server. It will then open a window prompting for username and password.
