why doesn't the downloads windowemain open after downloading a file?

the downloads window in my version of windows xp pro, sp3, opens with a blank downloads window. it does not show the progress of a download, and the window is blank.

in tools/options, i checked the option to "show the downloads window when downloading a file."

i left unchecked, "close it when all downloads are finished."

the remaining options are "always ask me where to save files," or, "save files to..." neither solves my issue.

i have created a downloads folder on my desktop. but, for my convenience, i would like the downloads window to remain open and displayall subsequent downloads instead of creating a downloads folder.

is there a solution?

p.s. i think that, in earlier versions of firefox, the downloads window showed a download's progress and remained open.
