A customer was unable to send mail, getting the error message attached. SMTP settings were OK, but no connection to the server was ever initiated (verified via packet trace on the Firewall). I run Thunderbird in debug mode ( set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=IMAP:4,SMTP:4 / set NSPR_LOG_FILE=%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\Desktop\tbird_log.txt ) but only IMAP traffic was logged. I uninstalled Thunderbird, cleaned out the registry, renamed the Thunderbird profile folders and reinstalled, but the same problem continued. Finally I used the Sysinternals Process Monitor, which showed a "Name Collision" in C:\users\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp\nsemail-xxxx.eml ..... with xxxx ranging from 0001 to 9999. This leaded to the problem cause: for some reason Thunderbird is not cleaning the temporary file after sending it and ran out of range. Cleaning out the temp files solved the problem. Thunderbird 78 on Windows 7 32 bit

Thunderbird does clean up in the temp folder, but it is often prevented from doing so by other processes on the computer that prevent the deletions. A common one is anti virus products scanning slowly, but the general term contention really covers it.

However I do encourage you to filing a bug in Bugzilla with your information. At the very least the program should handle a messy temp folder gracefully. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/home The product is obviously Thunderbird if you file a bug.
