Ported into thunderbird from outlook express in preparation to move to windows 10 on another computer. Outlook express is uninstalled as part of this operation (didn't know that part). Now thunderbird want to download all the previous messages outlook express dealt with from years ago.. How can I stop it and only get the new messages?

Thunderbird does not uninstall or in any way modify outlook express or any pother mail program it imports from. If that is your experience, i suggest you look for another cause.

You can not tell Thunderbird what messages have already arrived from the server, this is what we get for being bower birds with old mail and saving it on the server when we should have deleted it. You can tell gmail not to download emails prior to a bate, but that is a gmail feature that is not widely supported with other mail providers.
