I need to import outlook 2003 into thunderbird, but the latest version (38) won't allow this and others say to use an older version of TB. But I don't know how to get and install version 31.

Old versions can be found here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/

Thanks, but I've already been there. What I don't know is which file do I DL and then how do I extract what I need to install? There were more files there than I knew what to do with.

The page I linked to shows all the versions. I'd go for the latest (highest numbered) in the issue you want. That would be 31.8.0/ for the situation you describe.

Then it shows options for which Operating System. You haven't said what you use, but you mention Outlook so it seems likely you're a Windows user. So, win32/ - note that, as yet, 64-bit versions are not being offered.

Now you choose your language. Again you haven't said what you want, but I'd guess en-US/ or en-GB/ being American English or British English respectively.

Finally you're shown a link to the required installer, for example, Thunderbird Setup 31.8.0.exe

Select this (I prefer a right-click, "Save link as" to avoid allowing the OS trying to second-guess my intentions) save it and then run the downloaded file.

You don't need to uninstall your existing version, though making a backup of your profile before installing is a wise precaution.
