Situation: I am logged in to Firefox. When I try to see a password in Lockwise it asks me to log in again. (This has not happened before) Then it rejects the login. I verify user name because it appears at the upper right corner of the screen. I verify the password because it is written down in a file and has worked in the past. I have up to date Windows 10 pro on a Dell PC and up to date Firefox. I have scanned for viruses with Norton.

Possible solutions: Maybe the password file is corrupted? I feel that I must reset the password but then would I lose all save passwords, bookmarks, etc.? Can I back up this data and restore it after I change the password? How would I use the recovery key?

Hello Doug,

Could it be that what you are seeing is that you are being prompted to enter your operating system password ?

Would you please take a look at this article :

McCoy -- That solved the problem. Thank you very much. I never would have thought of that by myself, and HOW WERE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?

My pleasure, Doug !

I never would have thought of that by myself, and HOW WERE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?

You're right; the only way you could have known would have been if you had seen this :

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/76.0/releasenotes/?utm_source=firefox-browser&utm_medium=firefox-browser&utm_campaign=whatsnew

But then, the average user doesn't know that after each update they would have to check the 3-bar menu → Options, and scroll down to "Firefox Updates" .......

Just in case you don't want to see that prompt every time :

Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter.
(ignore the warning)

Type in the search bar and look for the preference :

signon.management.page.os-auth.enabled

Change its value to false.

Then close and restart Firefox.

(this preference may be removed sometime in the near future )
