I really need to use message filters to organize incoming mail. The problem is that any message that is filtered and moved to a folder on my computer gets deleted from the server, That means that if I try to read a message that has been filtered on my laptop, I will not be able to see it on my iPhone when I am travelling. One suggestion is to copy filtered messages to their folders which will leave the original message on the server. But then I have two copies of each filtered message which is messy.

Is there a solution to this short of abandoning Thunderbird along with the features I really like??

Are you using an imap or pop mail account in Thunderbird?

IF IMAP: re :any message that is filtered and moved to a folder on my computer When you filter emails are you moving them out of the imap mail account and storing them in a folder outside of thunderbird in eg: My documents ? If yes, then you are instructing the filter to 'MOVE' that email off the server and store it someplace on your computer but not in the imap mail account. Suggest you review the filter and instruct it to 'COPY' instead to see if this has the desired effect.

Or have I misunderstood and you are moving the email to other imap mail folders?

Toad-Hall You have it right, and using a "copy' in the filter definition instead of "move" does the job, but then I have messages in both the inbox and the local folder.I am looking for a way to avoid that.

Why don’t you just do the move to an IMAP folder that’s actually synchronized with the server so that you can be sure it would be visible there too, as well as in other clients?

For that, make sure to

- Not copy the message to a local folder in Thunderbird (under Local Folders or even My Documents) that isn’t visible on the server, and - Use no folder structure higher than 2 levels deep, as 3 or more may cause Thunderbird not to work well due to some bug(s) - though that would be more of an issue to Thunderbird itself than to the server or other clients.

TOP25 Thanks. That sounds like just the answer I need but can you tell me the steps to do that?

I am not a total newbie but I don't know how the set up folders on the server

You can create IMAP-based subfolders when highlighting the proper Inbox in Thunderbird using File (press Alt or F10 when hidden to enable the menu bar) > New > Folder..., or by using the menu button > New message > Folder.... You could also do this on the server, but it may be more tricky. Gmail for instance requires you to create Labels, Outlook has a + button next to "Folders".

I haven’t set up any subfolders for those email providers but assume this should just work.

Thaaks Tonnes - but I need to set them up on the server if anyone knows how to do that

You set them up in Thunderbird and it creates them on the server, so long as they are subfolders of the account.

Creating folders on the server is exactly what should happen if you perform the steps given above in Thunderbird. After all, a client syncs folders and their content with the server so a folder created in the client, either as a subfolder of your Inbox or a normal folder like Sent should become visible on the server, probably right after creating it.

You can also do this by right-clicking your Inbox in Thunderbird for a subfolder, or the account name for a regular folder, and choosing New folder.... It’s not harder than that, and no rocket science.

I also described how to create folders on the server using webmail, didn’t I? ;) I’m sure that works too, although Thunderbird may require a restart for them to be synced.
