Shorty after having downloaded Firefox I was getting persistent popup ads from some disreputable site called newcar.com . I removed Firefox , no popups . Just a coincidence ?

Sorry to hear about your challenge using Firefox. An amazing addon called Adblock will be of help in blocking the popups that come up.

You should also check your add-ons. Some open ads.
