Firefox willnot minimise or close via buttons

I open Firefox and for few seconds the top right minimise,maximise and close buttons work but then they freeze and I cannot close firefox other than by using bar at bottom of screen and choosing "close window" I have uninstalled firefox and reinstalled and this did not work I have started Firefox in safemode and the problems continues Any ideas or thought welcome.

I have since realised that while I am in Firefox if I click on anything in a webpage that means a pop up dialogue box opens all aspects of these dialogue boxes are frozen - cannot download, save document etc.
