for some reason the bookmarks on my desktop were all replaced by a single folder called 'mobile'. i restored from a backup but it was two days old and missing a bunch of stuff i had just done. when i opened Firefox on the only mobile device on which i have it installed, my nexus 7 tablet' the missing bookmarks were there but immediately got overwritten by sync. is there an android backup like there is for the desktop? where is it?

Try to disconnect from Sync, quit Firefox, delete places.sqlite, restart Firefox, and re-set up Sync.
You may need to restore the bookmarks from an older JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
