How do \i move the bookmarks toolbar frm the top to the side, so it runs down the side of firefox?

Does the bookmarks sidebar do what you want. To open it use the keyboard shortcut Control+B, or in the View menu select Sidebar and then Bookmarks.

If it is just the bookmarks toolbar that you want, the Vertical Bookmarks Toolbar can do that.
