I cannot open downloaded files and photos

Basically as the title; whenever I download anything, whether it's an .exe file/program or a simple photo, nothing happens when I click on it in the downloads window to open it. If I do a search for it, the file isn't there, as though it's never been downloaded.

I have tried all the usual stuff, clearing cache etc, even reinstalling FF and done a system restore but nothing makes any difference.

If there is anything that shouldn't be there on my PC which might be causing this, I can't find it.

You can't open downloaded files from the Downloads window.
Right-click the downloaded file in the Downloads window and select Open Containing Folder.

You can open files from the downloads window (usually), by double clicking on them - I've done it for years!

But now I get the same result as above whther I do that or right-click; nothing happens. The Downloads window shows that the download completes and so on, but as stated above the file doesn't seem to exist.

Also, the "Open containing folder" link is greyed out, but if I check that folder by going to it manually the downloaded file isn't there, regardless of what I try to download.
