I am having trouble trying to access TB View Settings for this account. I can do it if I run TB in safe mode but otherwise it just ignores me.

I am using TB 52.9.1 (64-bit) on a Linux Mint 17.2 installation. I can access the View settings for this account if I run TB in safe mode but that is a pest and I would really like to try and resolve this problem.

When it works in safe mode, the culprit most likely is an add-on. Find out which add-on is causing the problem, and remove it (or update it, if there's a newer version available).

more options

The only add-on I am using is Lightning Calendar. I have reinstalled that add-on and it's still doing the same thing.

I don't want to operate without Lightning because I use it every day and I depend upon it.

Any other suggestions?

I can get around this problem in the interim because all I am using Account settings for is to change my signature. I can use the option to use a file instead which will get me around the problem.

Are you using the default theme?

I have no idea what the default theme is or how I check it. Can you elaborate please?

Hi Allen, Try this:

  1. Go to [=] > Help > Troubleshooting Information, then click on Open Folder.
  2. Close Thunderbird.
  3. Delete (or rename) the file localstore.rdf

That file contains your your window and toolbar customizations. Either there's a setting you haven't specified or the file itself is corrupt, and deleting it will cause a new file from default settings to be created the next time you run Thunderbird. Safe Mode uses a separate localstore file, which might be why the issue is not occurring in safe mode.

more options

I'm sorry to say that your suggestion did not work.

I renamed the file localstore.rdf to localstore_old.rdf and then loaded TB and tried to get to the Account Settings and it would not. Not only that, when I tried to use my preferences to show the remote content in another message it just did nothing.

When I looked at the folder, TB had not recreated the file localstore.rdf .

I have since restored localstore.rdf , started TB again and this time it did allow me to select my preference to show the remote content in that same message.

I have discovered that the info is too large (>10,000 characters) and although I post it, it gets rejected.

The full information is in a text file but it will not accept it because it isn't an image file.

If you wish I can email it to you.

The only other thing that I can do is to post the first 10,000 characters.

Pls advise

Allen

Bingo Toad-Hall!

That worked and I can now access Account settings. I am assuming that there is now no need to post the first 10,000 characters of the troubleshooting document.

Thank you very much.

As a matter of interest, what are those 2 files used for?

As a matter of interest if have run diff -y on those files with this result:-

allenb@arb-P7812 ~/.thunderbird/w388arwk.default $ diff -y session.json session_old.json {"rev":0,"windows":[{"type":"3pane","tabs":{"rev":0,"selected | {"rev":0,"windows":[{"type":"3pane","tabs":{"rev":0,"selectedallenb@arb-P7812 ~/.thunderbird/w388arwk.default $ allenb@arb-P7812 ~/.thunderbird/w388arwk.default $ diff -y xulstore.json xulstore_old.json {"chrome://messenger/content/addressbook/addressbook.xul":{"W | {"chrome://messenger/content/SearchDialog.xul":{"dateCol":{"oallenb@arb-P7812 ~/.thunderbird/w388arwk.default $ Does this give any clue?

session.json will contain the default toolbar layout and selections you choose. They are supposed to be updated and saved when you exit Thunderbird, so they are auto used next time you start.

xulstore.json is used to store all Toolbar, window layout and size/position settings. It is safe to delete that file as it will get auto recreated when Thunderbird is restarted.

It would seem one or both of these files had become corrupted.

There are some programs that can 'clean up' certain files. Programs like 'CCLeaner' or some Anti-Virus products can also be set to clean up files like session, password etc. It is probably a good idea to not allow those products to clean up any Thunderbird files or folders.

Good to hear all is ok again.
