Took the upgrade to T Bird 31 and since then I have had frequent Stalls/Hangs that seem to occur most frequently when downloading or sending emails. Also will happen, but not as frequently, when moving from one account (inbox) to another account (inbox). Frequency is almost all the time but seems to get worse the longer T Bird runs. Typical example of the stall: Send a message, up comes the sending message progress dialog and bar. Progress bar proceeds to 100% (green all the way and says 100%) and then stalls. The mail HAS been sent! T Bird will then eventually either complete in many seconds to minutes or if I try to do something else in T Bird I will get the (Not Responding) header and eventually (sometimes) gray out. The Windows Task Manager shows nothing special, no HI CPU, disk activity, or low resources in either T Bird or System. During this condition other applications, including FireFox continue to work fine.

Configration: Windows 7 Home Premium. Latest M-Soft fixes (August Patch Tuesday) 64 bit machine and OS, 16 GB, lots of spare disk, no significant fragmentation. Also running FireFox (current version) as primary browser with no problem. T Bird has 5 email accounts, 4 POPS and 1 Gmail and several thousand message. The number of messages has NOT changed significantly since well before problem started. I have also recently compacted folders and emptied trash.

Recently, or at just about the same time installed McAfee Total Protection 2014 after years with Norton/Symantec. I have turned off the McAfee addin in T Bird but not removed either the addin or the McAfee application. Is ther an interaction I should be aware of?

There have been numerous reports that McAfee causes slowdown and not responding as it is working in the background scanning emails. This is a link to the official response with advice:

re: gmail If this is an IMAP mail account, do you subscribe to see the 'All Mail' folder? This is gmail archive of all your emails, so it really is a duplicate of your emails. It is advised that you do not subscribe to see this folder as it can get huge. See info under 'All Mail' section here:

re: Pop mail accounts. Not sure on your setup but... General advice is to keep the Inbox folder low in email numbers and use it as an inbox for receiving new mail. I set up Archive Options and use this to Archive emails by month and year and keep folder structure. This helps to keep the working folders smaller in size and therefore use less memory. All archived emails are still available via the folder pane under Archives, so would still need to be included in your Profile backups.

See info on Archiving:
