how can I set Firefox Private Browsing to be the default startup window?
I would prefer not to launch 2 windows to get Private browsing, if possible. If there is a way to set up Firefox to automatically launch a private browsing window as default, I'd appreciate eliminating extra steps, and wasted resources.

Yes the shortcut used could be changed, or a similar result is obtained by setting Firefox to not remember history.
It depends on your requirements. If I was doing that sort of thing I would probably at the moment set up separate Firefox profiles, one for private browsing and one for ordinary browsing. Basically you append a space and -private to one of the shortcuts used. Right clicking a desktop item allows you to see then edit its shortcut properties See
