Even though firefox is set to download files to my /home/downloads directory, it is actually downloading to /tmp/mozilla_ethan0

I can change the download location to anywhere i want, it still downloads here. It is wiped every time Firefox restarts inside of the tmp directory.

Ubuntu 16.04 x64

Firefox immediately starts downloading the file in the background and saves the file to the temp folder and doesn't wait until you specify the name and the location (destination folder). If the file stays in the temp directory then it is possible that Firefox isn't able to move the file to the specified destination directory.

Did you check the permissions of the /home/downloads directory?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
