I have been using FF 3.6.12 for some time and find it great, now seeing FF4 looks good but will I lose all my bookmarks and settings, is there any way to save bookmarks to some where or do I have to manually record each one the re-type them again.

We will not lose any of the bookmarks, password stored on upgrading firefox. We will not even lose our browsing session and we can restore all the windows and tabs after the upgrade.

You can export the bookmarks to an HTML file to have a backup copy.
You can import that copy if you need to restore those bookmarks. Importing an HTML backup will merge those bookmarks with the existing bookmarks, so you won't lose bookmarks that you already have.
