After loading 3.6.6, selective clearing of history does not work. I monitor/admin several discussion boards and need to retain that history so I can see what I've read. I do not need to keep email history, news, etc. Before 3.6.6 I could highlight an item in history and delete the following items, skip the ones to save, then continue deletions. Now, I delete a few items and the cursor jumps to the top of the page. If I am not very careful I will delete items I want to keep. No, the "sort" option makes no difference.

Try the Form History Control extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12021/

It has a "Never Cleanup" option that I use to "lock" the data fields I want to keep.
