In the past a message was displayed below the Inbox message list. Now that area is blank and I have to double click the message line in the list. That takes me to a full screen view of the message. I can't find an option or setting that controls that. How can I make it resume displaying the message below the Inbox mail list?

Did you turn the Message Pane off? Pressing F8 toggles it on and off. You can also go to the menu bar and select View-Layout-Message Pane.
