Firefox is my default browser, yet Bing appears when opening a new tab. How can I stop this?

more options

I have set Firefox as my default browser with Google as my default search engine. I have eliminated Bing from the drop-down list in Firefox of alternate engines. However, when I am browsing and open a new tab, the Bing search window page appears. Google is still in the search line at the top of the page.

I want Google to be the search engine that appears, not Bing.

Try setting your home page to Google.

  • Go to your Firefox preferences: Tools -> Options
  • Click on the General tab
  • In the "Home Page" box, type in "http://www.google.com"
  • Press OK

Thank you for the suggestion, however, it is my organization's webpage that is designated as my Home Page, so when I open up Firefox it is the page that appears first. If go to the search bar, I have two options: either to conduct my search by overwriting my Home Page location with my search request, (there is an arrow turning right at the far right of this option), or I also have an adjacent second browser bar with Google as the search engine (there is what looks like a magnifying glass at the right of this option).

When I open a second tab, it is not my Home Page that appears but the search engine Bing. My Home Page address does not appear in the first search bar, so presumably Bing is associated with it; Google is still the engine associated with the second bar.

I've looked everywhere that I can think of to designate Google as the primary search engine but am seemingly not finding an additional location where I can do that. Hope this helps to help resolve this.

Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter.
If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.

Filter = bing
Right-click and use Reset every preference that appears for bing, then Restart Firefox.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I am taken to a page of websites to choose from, so I'm not getting to a location where I can complete the next steps you suggested.

Didn't realize I needed to start a new session before following your suggestions. Went back and tried it again, was able to get to the list, filtered it, and tried to do the Reset. Unfortunately this did not help to resolve the problem. Appreciate your trying to help though.

One of the suggestions on the forum to simply remove the Start Now bar did the trick - at least for now. Thanks for your help in sending me to the forum to get this resolved.
