I can send email, but not receive it. It looks like it is connecting to the server, but it never actually goes to check my account.

I have checked the network, and there is no known outage. My webmail account works fine.

But Thunderbird just doesn't seem to complete the process of connecting to my account and downloading the messages.

It worked fine until this morning.

Well, who knows why, but the problem has corrected itself, it seems. If it doesn't come back, great. A happy ending to an unsolved mystery?

It makes me nervous to have something like this happen, but at least for now it's working again!

Most Earthlink users use Nortons. Nortons behaves very badly with application updates for Thunderbird.

Are you a Nortons user?

Yes, I use Norton. I never had any problems before today.

disable the mail scanner and check the firewall will allow Thunderbird 60.3. The latter is probably the most likely, but as the mail scanner does not work for about 95% of email accounts disabling it will be no loss.

Disabling email protection didn't help.

Looked around and couldn't figure out how to find the Firewall setting that would allow Thunderbird. Can you tell me where it is?

I really appreciate the help.

I found it. It already was set to allow Thunderbird.

I'm really going crazy here. I need to be able to download my mail.

What else could be causing this??

In future, what sometimes helps is uninstall Thunderbird, download it, and reinstall.
