I'm new to Thunderbird and am used to a tool bar that allows me to change the type, size, and color of a font as well as to italicize, underline, and enbolden.

Yes, if you compose using HTML markup and enable the "Formatting Bar". See attached image.

I also use an add-on named Extra Format Buttons which makes it possible to select typefaces and explicit sizes. Many users find the regular "smallest/smaller/small/normal/large/larger/largest" settings offered by Thunderbird inadequate to their requirements.

https://codefisher.org/projects/extra_format_buttons/

HTML markup is enabled in Account Settings under Composition & Addressing.

If you can't see a toolbar, use alt or F10 to make a menu appear and there go to View|Toolbars and select the toolbars you want to enable.

I'm not at all computer-savvy. The compressed file extra-format-button-1.2 is now listed among my Downloads. What do I do to get the menu with the additional options for bold face, italics, strikethrough, etc. to appear when I'm composing an email?

You don't need the addon for those basic formatting functions. So first of all we need to make the regular built in toolbar visible. I'm surprised you don't have it because it is enabled by default on a new installation of Thunderbird.

The addon won't help right now because it modifies the built in toolbar and you need to be able to see that.

So I repeat:

HTML markup is enabled in Account Settings under Composition & Addressing.

If you can't see a toolbar, use alt or F10 to make a menu appear and there go to View|Toolbars and select the toolbars you want to enable

OK; I see the regular built-in toolbar and acknowledge that I can perform the basic formatting functions. Now how do I use the downloaded add-on (extra-format-button-1.2) to select typefaces (e.g. strikethrough) and explicit sizes?

I attempted to add on extra-format-button-2.0 to my version of Thunderbird which is 52.3; but apparently it works only with Thunderbird versions 1.5 - 41.0. Earlier versions of extra-format-buttons" didn't work either. What can I try next?

Ah, my mistake. I should have directed you here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/extra-format-buttons/

This offers version 1.3, which is the one I am using in TB 52.3.0.

I got the same message when I tried adding on version 1.3; i.e. it works only with Thunderbird versions 1.5 - 41.0.

I am stumped. It is working here in TB 52.3.0.

A simple statement of intended compatibility doesn't mean it won't work.

I went back (almost) to "square one" and closely followed the instructions in one of the links that you provided...and voila! The add-on was successfully implemented. Thank you for your patience!
