Why does this tab show up instead of my set homepage?

Okay so I'm not sure if this is because of a new update on firefox, or whether or not it was something I downloaded, but I keep having this tab show up every time I load a new window. It's really annoying. I have my homepage set to google but no matter how many times I set it, this shows up in it's place. I've run all sorts of other programs to clean up my computer, yet nothing has worked. So I tried getting an add on to block this site, which I don't think it is. But it just didn't work. I'm at a lost, and I need help. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this and stop it from showing up on my browser?

This is the address: file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Firefox/

Your Firefox reported itself to be Firefox 47, so you probably haven't updated this month.

If you got a brightly colored page with a Firefox Logo pushing an urgent update or urgent patch through a download pop-up: that was a malware phishing page and you should immediately start cleaning up with the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and also some of the others listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. But to get back to your question, it's possible the "target" in your desktop shortcut is corrupted. The Firefox icon can be set up to launch specific pages at startup (or more specifically, when you use the icon). To check whether that is set:

First, open the shortcut as follows:

  • Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

You'll see the Target highlighted. On 64-bit Windows, that usually is no more and no less than the following:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If anything follows after that, try clearing it out.

After OK'ing the Properties dialog, you can test right away to confirm that Firefox now launches only your home page. Either:

  • double-click desktop shortcut
  • right-click pinned taskbar icon, click Mozilla Firefox

Success?

I'm not sure if I should post this here or open a new (but similar) question, but on the version (50.0.2) on my MacBook Air, I often get the"Volunteer with Mozllla" page (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/contribute/) instead of Startpage, my default homepage. Annoying. Even BlockSite won't stop it. I don't know at what version this was offered but I may revert to an earlier version or find a way to deal with it in Terminal or my profile. I don't mind ads as long as I can control them!

Hi oldbrownhat, I can't imagine why you get that page. Could you double-check that it hasn't been added as a second home page under Preferences? This article might help: How to set the home page.

Well, I'll be danged... Yes, indeed that was the problem, despite the fact that I had set Startpage as my home page! I never thught to check because, well, why would it change? I'll keep an eye on that.  :)
