What happens if I update to the newest version of Firefox and Avast is not compatible?

I keep getting prompted to update Firefox, but it also gives me a warning that Avast (my anti-virus software) won't work and will be disabled. That seems like it would be a bad choice. When will Avast be compatible and/or what happens if I don't update Firefox?

All that will be disabled is an Avast add-on for Firefox, not the entire anti-virus application. See Avast for an updated version of their Firefox add-on.
